BACKGROUND: After Director Julian Reyes spoke at AWE XR 2023 on Mapping Immersive Worlds, he noticed there wasn’t any community space to learn about these immersive technologies in depth. As a longtime curator of art, events, XR experiences, and electronic music, he was inspired to co-create the Virtual Worlds Museum, alongside longtime friends, volunteers, advisors, and XR professionals.
Combined with our commitment to ethics and community-building, our mission is to educate, preserve the history of these technologies, and bring like-minded organizations together. Our vision is to collaborate on a grand scale: we want to invite developers, platforms, standards organizations, companies, and our community to help us curate and build this collective project.
The “Metaverse” has been a term since 1992. The concept eventually became mislabeled, overused, and misconstrued.
We strive to help bring clarity amidst the variances and confusion around this nomenclature and technology. We feel that virtual worlds are the "seeds of the Metaverse" and our exploration and research seeks to track its evolution through our exhibits, programs, and XR resources.
