Explore the latest Virtual Worlds Museum updates, including Metaportal on Artizen, Teleportal interoperability, IMMERSIVE X, SVVR, and BurnerSphere.

This month, we are looking at what comes next in our mapping of virtual worlds. From the evolution of the Teleportal into a multiplayer Metaportal, to new interoperability features on Meta Quest version, to our growing collaboration with IMMERSIVE X, we are continuing to explore how people can more easily discover, navigate, and experience virtual worlds together:

The Metaportal is now featured on Artizen. While Teleportal focuses on mapping, discovery, and navigation, Metaportal expands the idea into a multiplayer experience where people can meet, organize world hops, and travel together across virtual platforms. We are using Artizen to help support the next stage of development and invite our community to follow the project, share it, and help us build toward a more connected virtual worlds ecosystem.

“Artizen is more than a platform. It’s a new kind of game—one designed to be fair, fun, and rewarding for everyone who plays.” ~ René Pinnell

The Teleportal on Meta Quest continues to grow. A new AR passthrough feature now lets visitors blend the 3D map with their physical surroundings using an adjustable control slider. Teleportal also supports interoperable launching into six platforms: Roblox, VRChat, Horizon Worlds, ENGAGE XR, BurnerSphere, and Banter.
Even more exciting, two external platforms now have working portals back into the Teleportal!
With two additional integrations in development. We are beginning to see the idea move beyond simply linking virtual worlds toward creating interoperable pathways between them on the Meta Quest. We’re also working on agnostic versions for PC and SteamVR.

The Virtual Worlds Museum™ is partnering with IMMERSIVE X, the global XR festival in VR, taking place November 10 through 12 under the theme “Reclaim the Future.” The Museum is an official festival sponsor, while IMMERSIVE X is supporting the Spotlight Video Series as Associate Producer.
Selected talks and panels will take place inside Virtual Worlds Museum™ hubs, including conversations about the Teleportal, sustainable creator ecosystems, interoperability, and what the history of sunset virtual worlds can teach us about building spaces that last. Together, the partnership connects preservation, discovery, education, and community across multiple virtual worlds.

Virtual Worlds Museum™ Director Julian Reyes will speak at Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) on September 24 from 7 to 10 PM at Frontier Tower in San Francisco. Julian will introduce the Museum’s mission, share how its curated Exhibits became the foundation for the Teleportal, and demonstrate how the project is helping people discover and navigate virtual worlds. He will also highlight the Spotlight Video Series and the Museum’s growing involvement with IMMERSIVE X. SVVR has long been an important gathering place for the Bay Area XR community, making it a great setting to share how these projects are evolving.
SVVR #102: September 24, 7 to 10 PM @ Frontier Tower, San Francisco

We’re incredibly grateful to the BurnerSphere team for their continued work preserving and expanding Burning Man culture through an immersive social experience. We’re especially honored that BurnerSphere has placed a VR portal to the Teleportal in Center Camp, just behind the Info Booth, creating another real connection between virtual worlds.
Thank you to the entire team for supporting interoperability, community, and our shared commitment to keeping digital culture discoverable and connected.
And thanks to BurnerSphere, we’re offering a one-month free discount code: VWM2026
So you can jump in via VR or desktop, meet fellow Burners, explore Center Camp, and visit recreations of Burning Man Temples from past years. Sign up here and start exploring: https://profiles.burnersphere.com/

A big thank you to Dr. Marcel Pflug and GameBoyMuseum.com for featuring the Virtual Worlds Museum™ and Teleportal in their recent article, “The Museum Racing to Save Worlds Before They Switch Off.” The piece draws a thoughtful connection between preserving physical gaming history and preserving virtual worlds that can disappear entirely when their servers go offline. As they put it, our missions may look different on the surface, but both are rooted in making sure important pieces of digital culture are still there when people go looking for them.
We’re also happy to share that Game Boy Museum has now been added to the Virtual Worlds Museum™ Game Museum Directory, helping visitors discover more organizations working to preserve the history of games and interactive culture.
